Monolithic vs Microservices Architecture Pros and Cons

Microservices enables you to design your application as a collection of loosely coupled services. They follow the share-nothing model and run as stateless process. This approach makes it easier to scale and maintain the application

A typical Monolithic and Microservices Architecture is shown below

Monolithic Architecture

Entire application is built as a single unit which contains the

  • User Interface,
  • Business Logic and
  • Data access layer
All these 3 services are defined as a single application and they share the same resources including the database.
Main problem in monolithic application is, if one services goes down, entire application is impacted.

Microservices Architecture

Business logic Multiple loosely coupled applications. Each service has its own resources. Resiliency is much higher compared to Monolithic architectures
